lang variable not being sent

I have just installed this script on a friend's website and I can't either view the calendar, or login to the admin area, as it's not finding the lang file. It looks to me that the 'en' variable is not being sent... How can I remedy this? Here is the error I get. As you can see, it's looking for .la...

Thnaks, I have replied in the Google group with a link to the phpinfo file so you can have a look, but I don't think it is enabled and the host says it will not change configuration, as it is a shared server.
